There is really old writing advice that says, "Write what you know."
I had always tried to follow it, although solid research can help you write about events and places you don't know firsthand. But then I asked myself one day what would happen if I took that advice very, very literally and wrote about abuse and its effects.
Six books later, I have my answer.
I try, of course, to look at different facets of my experiences as I write. I would be bored if I ended up writing the same book over and over again, and readers would be bored, too. But it turns out I have a lot to say about this topic.
But it's more than about giving myself a voice. It's about letting readers who are like me know they are not alone.
I always wanted my writing to make a difference in the world, and this is one way to help make that happen.
